Xinhua, Sept. 9, 2013: [Tepco] said Monday it detected a new site with leaked
toxic water in the complex, immediately after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe
said the issue is under control. [...] Meanwhile, the International
Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said that it will dispatch a team of nuclear
experts to Japan in autumn to investigate the toxic water issue. Yukiya Amano,
director general of the IAEA, said that the massive buildup of
radioactive water at the power plant was a problem that needed to be
coped with urgently, said Kyodo. [...]
Jiji Press, Sept. 9, 2013:  [Tepco] said Monday that groundwater sampled Sunday
from an observation well north of a leaky water storage tank at its
crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power station was found to have
contained 3,200 becquerels per liter of beta ray-emitting materials,
including strontium. [...]  TEPCO said it now seems more likely that
leaked water mixed with groundwater.
AFP, Sept. 9, 2013: [...] groundwater from an observation well near the site of
a leaky storage tank showed high levels of radiation, according to
reports. The finding means that it “now seems more likely” that
radioactive water from leaking tanks had mixed with groundwater in the
area, Jiji press and Kyodo news agency quoted [TEPCO] as saying. Many of the
tanks were used to cool molten reactors [...] TEPCO also plans to
use wells to pump up the groundwater before it seeps into the sea. But,
according to Kyodo news, the latest findings could affect that plan as
the nearest pumping well is only 130 metres (140 yards) away from the
monitoring site from where the sample was taken.
RTT News, Sept. 9, 2013: The samples, collected on Sunday from a well 20 meters
north of the water storage tank in the H4 area, contained beta-ray
emitting substances including strontium, Japanese media reports said.
Asahi, Sept. 9, 2013: When asked to pick one option among four in regard to
the gravity of the problem, 95 percent of respondents answered it is
“serious.” Of that number, 72 percent said “very much” and 23 percent
said “to some degree.”
