We live in a very high-humidity, high-volume tick area so I have my mini-doodle shaved almost to the skin in April when the ticks first hatch so I can spot them on him easier. It is now mid-May and his hair has regrown to about 1/4 - 1/2 inch. He looked like a little rat-dog at first, but now he looks like a mini-Lab and his coat is very wavy and luxurious. His ears are georgous but I will trim around his eyes and muzzle soon. I like him better with a closer cut -- he looks very muscular and elegant. I bought my own set of clippers and will keep him trimmed down to 1/2 inch all summer.
For the winter, I had him groomed very close in December and then let it grow until his April cut. By then it was very long, held too much dirt, held dust, smelled bad, was partially matted, and every time he went out in the snow he came in with huge clumps of ice on his legs that he wouldn't let me blow dry. I won't let it grow that long again. I don't think the hair keeps him all that warm to begin with. I may have given you more info than you asked for but that's my two cents!
