Geri,
My spayed female
will stay her with me. Since all dogs (breeding stock or pets) live as
family members 1st...we can't part with her. If I viewed my dogs as
money makers...I would be rehoming her to make room for another female
in our home.
You are right...as
a human being I would refer to my dogs as as a commodity...all my dogs
(breeding dogs) and every pup I sell are 1st and foremost beloved
family members. This is why I do not have a kennel and am only
interested in placing future breeding stock in guardian
families.
The reference to
them as a commodity was just purely a term used in describing the business
end (ie legal part of the business/taxes, )...so try not to read more into it
than it was intended.
My only point was
in reference to why we do more health testing on our breeding dogs than
people do when they decide to have children.
When cancer, heart
disease, arthritis, etc runs in families, does this stop people from
having children knowing that their offspring is also at risk? But again...like I
mentioned ...we don't sell our children...
According to
Webster's....Something of use, value, advantage other than a service is a
commodity.
I am sure there
are breeders who just view their dogs as a business asset.
I will never
become a big breeder, per sey....becuase I just don't have the heart to
let my dogs when they won't be bred anymore.
Eventually...down
the road...when the few breeding dogs I do have end up retiring...well I guess
we will just have a houseful of pets!

I just have a question, what will you do with the spayed female? I just
joined the list to warn of putting any dog in a crate with a collar, and to
maybe find a breeder near my daughter to replace her dog.
She did find a new puppy, who is adorable, and who will hopefully give
her family many years of pleasure. The dog cost $600.00, I guess that's cheap,
but my grandkids love her.
I have a Humane Society mutt, she is lab, terrier, and whatever. She is
healthy, loving and sweet. She loves people and kids.
I can understand if someone goes into the business of breeding dogs, but
I guess I can't understand looking at a dog as a commodity. A dog is a
living, breathing animal that gives nothing but love. I would rather buy a dog
from people that love their dogs. Not from someone that just looks at the
parents as money makers.

I agree Adrienne.
Many people comment and say that breeders test their dogs more and
worry more about producing offspring with problems that HUMANS do when they
decided to have children. ANd yes...this is true...but
My comment to them is
just like yours....we produce dogs as a commondity to sold

I am spaying a female
breeding dog next month because she was diagnosed with Autoimmune
Hypothyroidism (the disease can't be diagnosed ahead of time...only when it
actually surfaces). I did contact the puppy owners to tell them becuase I
felt it was the responsible thing to do. Much to my surprise I received
comments back from some owners who were surprised that I would spay her for
a disease that is not all that bad or life threatening and can be 100%
controlled with synthetic hormones. Autoimmune
Hypothyroidism is genetic and I can't in all good conscience breed
her.
This dog as a puppy cost me $10,000 2 yrs ago from Rutland Manor. Will I get
a refund or replacement pup? Highly unlikely since she has been bred even
though I do feel I should be compensated somehow. I did not spend $10K on a
breeding female to retire her at age 2
!!
As far as Carla...I
commend her for no longer breeding.
Yes...testing can be
very expensive and you don't mind spending the money if the dog ends up
being a breeding candidate but it's all the hundreds of dollars that can go
into testing/raising/feeding/health care for breeding stock that end up
with negative test results that make that dog no longer a candidate for
breeding. These are real costs that are factored into the cost of
breeding
I may be wrong...but
I would suspect any who sells doodles for $500 would have to be cutting
cormers somewhere.
I spend $400 a
month just to feed 5 dogs! (raw diet using the more expensive
convience prepacked foods)

The difference between people's children and breeding dogs
is that, hopefully, your children's great-grandfather is not also their
uncle and perhaps their father. And, I presume, you don't sell your
children. I don't think you're comparing apples with apples.
Again, not looking for guarantees, just responsible, ethical
breeding.

We have been raising labradoodles for 3 years. We have
excellent stock and the criteria many people look for is really extreme.
None of us would be perfect, nor would any of our kids if had them
xrayed and tested before we took them home
!!.
