I had a Standard Poodle for one month shy of 15 years before I lost him to cancer and age. I know the smell you talk about. I now have a medium, multi generation Labradoodle from RM and the smell is the same. Wet or dry, he doesnt have that doggy smell. I often pick him up to let people that dont know the breed smell him and they cant believe it. He is 8 months now and because they recommend not bathing them unless really necessary (Im assuming that means something like getting sprayed by a skunk), Ive never bathed him. He goes to work with me every day and I work for a machine shop where oil, grease and dust from the shop are walked into my office and he still manages to stay clean. Ive seen him role in the mud and be clean again in about an hour. Dirt just falls off. I do think that if you got a F1 or maybe F1b, you might not have this ability, and the coat type probably has something to do with it also. My Labradoodle has a fleece coat, non shedding coat and I havent talked to anyone that has a curly or straight coat Labradoodle to see if this is the case.
