I did my Advanced Driving Test exactly 20 years ago, the year after I did
the basic test for a license. By then the commentary had become optional,
and I didn't give a commentary during my test. However I did do
commentaries during the practice sessions. My local group then worked on
the basis of 2 learners and 1 helper (not an instructor) in each car.
Listening to the other learner comment while watching the road really helped
me learn, and listening to the helper do it when he or she drove was a
revelation about how much stuff I was not seeing. It's not a skill one
needs in practice, but having to note that you've seen something ahead,
behind, are slowing down for a hill, a child and so on did help me learn to
observe better. A lot of the advanced test is about observation skills, as
most of the physical skills can be taken for granted in someone who has
passed the normal test.
