Harry Potter went on sale at midnight. People were queueing for more than 8
hours outside some bookshops. Waterstones in London had a Harry Potter party
prior to midnight with stars such as Dame Judy Dench dressed as characters
from the books.

The Net Book Agreement which ensured that books from UK publishers who
signed it were sold at the cover price (with some exceptions such as schools
and libraries being able to get a discount of 10%) collapsed in (I think)
1994, and since then retailers have been free to discount books as they
wish. The cover price of the latest Harry Potter is 16 pound 99 pence, the
lowest quoted last night was 7 pounds 49 pence offered by one of the
supermarkets and they reckoned they were still making a small profit.

I must be one of the few people on the planet who hasn't read any of them.
