Not in common use, but "going south" as a description for somethimg moving
downwards is ,known in german, too: may it be physically or may it be the
earnings of a company. i always thought this analogy of "south" for "down" was
derived from the convention of geographical maps, known world-wide, 
and has nothing to do with teasing (and more) between northeners and
southeners in some regions or countries.
