Dug out my old book Cannibals & Kings, The Origins of Cultures by Marvin Harris. It does make interesting reading.
According to Harris, the body fat threshold to "accommodate the demands of a foetus" is 20 to 25%. He points out the diet of the Kalahari people was high in animal and plant proteins which enabled women to lactate for up to 4 years (which in itself keeps body fat down). Peoples who subsist on starchy staples, carbohydrates, can only keep pregnancies some 18 months apart. And in our current carbohydrate rich society, girls are maturing much earlier than in past history. The point is, keep the women low ranking (baby girls are lowest in the scale), glorify the warlike male to make this acceptable, you keep the birthrate down and there's less demand on the available food sources. And we've inherited this stone age concept without realising it (until now, of course!).
