[...] the diet of the Kalahari people was high in animal and plant proteins which enabled women to lactate for up to 4 years (which in itself keeps body fat down). Peoples who subsist on starchy staples, carbohydrates, can only keep pregnancies some 18 months apart.
Which, in our advanced ("advanced"?) cultures is immaterial, since many (most?) women switch to a bottle and The Pill within 3 months (if not immediately) of birthing. Things may have changed some but, 25 yrs ago, my friends in Poland thought I was nuts to have breast-fed my son till he was almost 1... OTOH, I wasn't too enchanted, either, with a woman here in town, whose 2.5yr old would pull a chair up to her (in the middle of a gathering), unbutton her blouse, and "serve himself"; if he had enough dexterity to handle buttons, then he could handle a cup :)
we've inherited this stone age concept without realising it (until now, of course!).
Well... That's one of the "bells" that Toni's been "ringing" (sometimes so persistently, that even I lose patience <g>)...
