I can endorse the recommendation of the Embroidery Shop in Edinburgh. Don't
be deceived by the small size of the premises as they are absolutely packed.
If you can't see what you are looking for just ask and it may be produced from
a drawer or a cupboard. As I only get there once a year I usually spend a
small fortune. They usually have bobbins but you have to ask.
It is beyond the Castle end of
Princess Street. If you do venture along in that direction there is a shop in
Castle Street (off Princess Street opposite the Castle) which I like to visit.
It is on the right as you walk up from P. Street about at the crest of the
first hill. I've forgotten its ecact name but it is words to the effect of
Self help for gentlewomen of reduced circumstances. It is a charity, staffed by
volunteers, to which elderly women of reduced means may send their crafts for
sale with all the proceeds being passed on to the craftswoman. They sell all
kinds of textile crafts, all beautifully made. There's a lot of knitting and
crochet, sewing and cross stitch cards plus home made cakes. jams and
preserves and tablet. I know these are good because I've been there when customers
have come in asking for them. Unfortunately, I can't remember which day the
home baking usually arrives. It has occurred to me that tablet is probably
unknown to most on the list. it is a Scottish delicacy made with much the same
ingredients as fudge but with a granular texture. I'm unfortunately too fond of
it for my own good :-)
