Dear Katrina,
Mind you, I can't think what other irregular verb the American past tense of dive is trying to copy. Weave/wove comes closest, though live/love is interesting to thing about.
I'm not positive about American English, but in Australian English you could compare:
drive/drove/driven; strive/strove/striven; give/gave/given;
but DEFINITELY: dive/dived/ have dived
