I reupholstered my previous 3 piece suite, and unpicked one of the cushion covers to use as a pattern. The covers weren't meant to be removed, and had a join in the wall on each side, so that the cushion could be turned back to front and the joins would still be hidden at the sides. Apart from whichever end was chosen to be the front, the side and back walls of the cushion were hidden by the arms and backs of the chairs and settee.
On a fireside chair, where the walls are visible, there's just one join and that's at the back. The cushion is shaped so that it's wider at the front than at the back, and is only meant to be used with the one front wall and two sides showing. That means that however you look at the chair, there isn't a seam visible in the wall. My current suit has removeable covers. That has a separate back wall with a zip, so there are seams at each back corner. There's also a join in one of them along one side, where they obviously hadn't got a piece of material long enough.
