The significance of the 21st birthday used to be that that was when a person
officially became an adult. I got married at 19, and at that time had to
have my parents' permission to do so as I was under 21.
I also married at age 19, but at the time and the state in which I married, 
it was also necessary to have the court's permission as well.  My father had to 
accompany me when I petitioned the court and state that I had his permission. 
 For me that was a scary thing, but I have been married to the same wonderful 
man for almost 43 years.
