[...] a book that had the historical meanings behind these nursey rhymes and when I got home I went on a book hunt for it. The name of the book is The Oxford Dictionary of Nursey Rhymes edited by Iona and Peter Opie. Published by Oxford Press. The ISBN is 0-19-860088-7.
If you found that book interesting, you'd probably find "The Classic Fairy Tales" by the same authors (Oxford U Press, 1974) *riveting* <g> The Opies have published a whole slew of books on subjects related to children's literature and language, and all of them are fascinating. As a matter of fact, DH used their "Oxford Nursery Rhyme Book" in his introductory course to poetry, as a standard text (since the 18 yr olds were likely to be familiar with the text itself, but never gave much thought to "dissecting" the rhymes)
