I recently watched a program about the people who live in Eyam, Derbyshire who are direct descendents of people who survived the plague (which, by the way, swept across Europe on more than one occasion, killing millions). Some people got sick, but recovered and some never contracted it. It was discovered that these family members had a high reading of Delta 8 (I think it was called) which has the effect of inhibiting disease. Tests were then done on other chunks of the population to find out how widespread Delta 8 is in the population. I don't remember the percentages but in the black community it is virtually unknown which is why Aids has hit African countries so hard. They discovered that people with high Delta 8 were unlikely to get HIV/Aids and interviewed some people in the gay community who had lost several partners to the disease and had been sexually active for 20-25 years with no sign of contracting the disease. Others had been infected, but the disease had not progressed. People doing genetic research are looking at what this knowledge can offer for the future.
