Avital,

I'm sorry - I was being flippant in order to make a point. And probably didn't make
it too well so my apolobies to you and the list.

What I was trying to say were two things - the people who often accuse us of not doing
anything were not personally affected by the event they are arguing about (the last
time someone had a go at me about the holocaust, it turned out that the person in
question was stationed on the same base in Burma as my Dad) and often, those who have
a go were not alive either when the event happened so we could argue were as
responsible as I am.

I cannot defend my country's stand on anything that happened before I was born as I
had no influence on it. Nor can I accept blame for actions taken by those during that
time.

What can I do?

Well, I can understand what happened and be sympathetic and make sure that I learn
from the mistakes of those before me and prevent it happening again.

What I should have said is that the reason I get so annoyed by accusations over the
holocaust is that I meet these people due to the work I do in promoting gentile /
jewish relations, work which has been recognised at a very high level, however, in
spite of all the work I do to remove prejudice and promote understanding I am often
pinned in in the corner by someone and then the demands for answers start about the
holocaust, progroms etc.

Funny, but I never have these questions from Rabbis or their families.

I'm a nice person (really) and spend an awful lot of my time promoting understanding
of judaism yet I find myself on my back foot alot.

As someone once said, all it takes for atrocities to happen is for good men to do
nothing. I for one, never do nothing.

My apologies for being flippant. I deserved the wrap on the knuckles.

Regards

Liz Beecher
