I assume that what Devon refers to as Thrift shops are our Charity shops - where people donate stuff they no longer want for sale in a good cause like "The British Heart Foundation " "National Children's Homes", "Oxfam".
I call in the 7 in Poole High Street on a Thursday when I get the weekly shop, just to see if there's anything worth buying. Last week I bought the books "Cattern Cakes and Lace" (recipes, crafts and saints associated with each month of the year), plus two on fashion history. I noticed matching buttons sewn on to cereal packet card in a box in one of the shops, but I didn't have more than a glance at them. It's fortunate that there are retired ladies willing to voluntarily work in these shops and do things like sew buttons on cards, and I feel guilty that I don't give some of my time in doing it. But, I'm selfish and that would be lacemaking time.
