Esther asked about a series of books she had read
"As a young girl I really enjoyed a series of book about 'the five'
five girls, the ringleader was a girl named Georgina, but know as
George due to the fact that she was a tomboy."

Although the Famous Five has been suggested for this and it seems most
likely, I wonder if you are combining them in memory with another series that you
also read because the Famous Five were brothers Julian and Dick with their
younger sister Anne, George (Georgina) their cousin, and Timmy who was George's
dog. So Anne was the only one you thought of as a girl and there were only four
children.

George's dad was "mad scientist" and the adventures were based on George's
island - Kirrin island - or when they were all off on camping holidays. I read
them over and over again, and wanted to be George.

When my children were young, post decimalisation, these books were
re-released but with decimal currency so all four children (and Timmy the dog) could
eat
an enormous supper at a farmhouse for 5 new pence. Even my young children
thought this was ridiculous, but when I tried to explain that the books had been
written many years before (in the dark ages, because I read them too) they
said they couldn't have been because we had pounds, shillings and pence when I
was little. It all got very complicated trying to convince them so I hope any
new reprints have reverted to the correct historical context.

There was also a television series, in the 1970s I think, where Timmy the dog
was a border collie (easy to train and available) but in my mind he is an
Airedale type mongrel as depicted in the original illustrations.

I was very tempted by a set of these books on e-bay a little while ago, but I
resisted. There are often copies to be found there at a reasonable price.
