There were attrempts this year to celebrate St George's day in many areas of the country. There are several reasons put about as to why we don't usually celebrates it. One is that the English flag (cross of St George) is associated with football hooligans rather than England. Another that Mr Blair doesn't encourage us to be 'nationalistic' - he wants us to be 'European'. That's being rebelled against now - Scotland, Wales and Ireland have their national days, so why shouldn't we? And before anyone in the UK pulls me up on the European bit, I know that's simplifying it, but I don't think a political argument is appropriate or of interest to anyone not involved in the Europe debate.
