The mention of 'blue' for whitening laundry reminded me of the time at
school we had to make and ice Christmas cakes. We were told to put a drop of
blue in the royal icing to make appear bright white - naturally I was the
only one to put too much in and ended up with a green cake! It wasn't too
bad though, as my mother put a different scene on the cake each year
(penguins on a pond, snowmen etc) and that year she had thought a Native
American scene complete with fire, squaw with papoose, chief and a wigwam
(all plastic figures) would be unusual. So the green icing became grass and
when the cake was on display with all the 'normal'ones after the school Xmas
performances it got more than a few double takes and laughs! Ah, happy
memories!
