the worst snake story i have was when i was swimming at a place called
low water bridge. it isn't much of a swimming hole, but in some parts
it is about 3 or 4 feet deep. it isn't very wide either, but very
cold. there is a spring that seeps into it that makes the water about
55 degrees even in the hottest weather. cold water is supposed to rid
snakes away and out of the water from what i have heard, but that ends
the myth.

i was swimming with my aunt and my two cousins and they were screaming
and fighting for about 45 minutes. they were just play fighting, but
they made enough noise to raise the dead. i'm not sure if that is what
the snake was after or not, but he decided to take himself for a swim
where we were at and he was about 2 or 3 feet from my head swimming by.
it was either a cottonmouth or a watermoccosin. it was beige with
diamond like markings or some kind of design on its back and took a
stroll right between us. we started to run out of the water and then
high-tailed it back to the car as quick as possible and went home. i
was always told snakes stay in warm water because that is where they
breed, but this water was so cold we had to first adjust to it before
we could start swimming, so it must be a myth.

i saw a bigger cottonmouth by my grandmother's house that stretched out
about 3 and 1/2 feet or 4 feet. he was on top of a big rock. that is
not the first one i have seen there. it is not uncommon in that creek
to see their heads sticking out of the water near a rock they are
hiding the rest of their body around.

the snakes are getting smaller and smaller since i was a teenager. my
dad and uncle took me and my other siblings on a nature walk through
the woods near my grandmother's house when i was 15, and we walked up
on a big rattlesnake coiled up about 4 coils. i don't know what size
that would be, but you could see his rattler. they all were carrying
guns just in case they met up with something, but they didn't shoot it.
their motto is "it isn't hurting you, so don't hurt it". we just
walked around the tree it was sitting by and kept going. we didn't see
it on our way back, so he must have slithered away or hid very well
near by.
