My first bobbins are easily recognisable because they have little transfers
of the Muppets on them :o) Varnish works well to start with but, in my
case at least, over the past 15-20 years the varnish has started to go soft
and you can scrape the varnish and transfer off some of them now with just
a fingernail. Nail varnish might work better than wood varnish, but I
haven't tried it.
