i think it really is their government representation. it shows they
have a leader who not only will not do anything for them, but also
doesn't know how. they were also being really sarcastic by doing
things the way they did, and sarcasm wasn't what anyone needed there.
instead of the first thought out of their mind being to save and help
the citizens of new orleans, it was "let's get even by not helping
because of what they did to us". that was spiteful and stupid on their
part.
as far as their leaders, did they ever hear of the term "the captain
goes down with the ship"? the leaders were so worried about getting
that pretty job working for the government, and didn't think that they
would be required to stay until the end. they took off and split.
they left their people there with no leadership, and no one knew what
to do. even the doctors left their posts. they aren't supposed to
leave until someone relieves them just like the military isn't. they
can be held responsible.
i think those are the reasons why that area didn't get evacuated
correctly. it has been a lot of years for blacks on their own not
associated with slavery, and they have been left with no guidance other
than each other because of prejudice shown towards them. they have
lived many other centuries without the help of the government. they
survived regardless of how much the prejudice wanted them to go away.
they didn't mess up.
didn't you think it was strange that all those blacks trying to save
each other in all those neighborhoods didn't have one little dingy or
row boat to go door to door with? don't you think someone could have
donated the use of them in this situation or maybe even blow up boats?
they weren't given any resources to take care of the situation. i don't
think they should be held totally responsible for how this situation
could be handled. i think someone didn't stay put long enough in their
jobs to lead these people to help themselves.
