Agreed, but why a "*red* hat which doesn't go and doesn't suit me." There are other colours whic don't go with purple - orange and yellow are two. I always took the meaning of the poem as doing things which would be disapproved of by others, and wearing a red hat would be one of them.

A friend always had a desire for a pair of "tart's shoes". Everyone knew she meant very high heeled *red* shoes.

Red satin underwear grimmed with black lace always used to be considered the most sexy combination.
