Not sure if number 2 would work in the UK (hitting the # key), but I
certainly do all the rest in David's email.
My best result for number (1) "Hold on please", was when the caller
rang back because "we'd been cut off somehow". I told her she'd tried
to waste my time, so now I was wasting hers, and would she hold on
please. When I heard the beep, beep after she rang off that time, I
put the receiver back and she immediately rang a third time. This time
she screamed "You're pathetic!", to whch I replied "I think it's you
that's pathetic for bothering to ring me to tell me I'm pathetic." and
I left the phone off the hook again. She didn't ring back a fourth
time.
Jean you have more patience than I do. We don't get many telesales
calls now, registering for telepreferencing does cut it down, but as
soon as a call sounds suspicious (ie they can't pronounce the surname)
I ask "what are you selling?" the answer is almost always that they
are not selling anything, so I let them prattle on until
kitchens/double glazing/xxxx is mentioned then I say "So you're selling
xxxx. We're on telepreferencing and you're telling lies" and hang up.
I do sometimes return junk mail in the reply paid envelopes, or return
blank reply paid postcards, always making sure that there's nothing
with my name or address on it. But, junk mail doesn't annoy me the way
phone calls do. Junk mail I can deal with in my own time, and recycle,
but phone calls need answering immediately - or maybe waiting for the
answerphone to cut in and then if there's no message doing 1471 to find
out who was calling.
