I started going grey at 17, and in the dim dark ages when I dyed my hair which was dark brown and is now white, I was told by a hairdresser not to use any of the 'ash' colours because the grey bits would come out red. It's a while since I last dyed my hair, so it's possible the formulas of hair dye may have changed.
