Actually, it's been *two* "difficult days" here. Perhaps, they could
even be called "Two Days of Heartbreaking Infamy". And nothing to do
with crippled cats, either.
We, in the US, have been lying through our teeth and bullying the world
for 5.5 yrs -- ever since Mr Chimp-in-Chief became the Selected
Resident. Today, we've reached the new low; we'll be "eating our own
young" and it'll be legal; comparisons to all the evil autocracies of
history -- Stalin, Hitler, PolPot, Saddam, you name it -- are no longer
a lefty hyperbole; they're *fact*.
The US Congress -- first the House (yesterday) and, today, the Senate
-- has wiped its collective butt on our Constitution and has passed the
Torture Bill. It allows the "executive" (ie the Chimp-in-Chief) to
determine who's "an unlawful combatant" and/or "a material witness". At
which point, that person can be "disappeared", for years, without any
recourse to the judicial system.
You can't complain -- because you have no rights and nobody knows where
you are. And nobody can complain on your behalf, because... see above.
"Will it go round in circles?" Assuredly, it will.
In case you thought that the new bill is in regards to "only ragheads"
(so who gives a d...?), think again. *Any* *citizen of the US* can be
"scooped" uder this law and thrown into a bottomless pit for ever.
Without ever knowing why. Without ever knowing if the nightmare will
end. You can be tortured (waterboarding is *not* an olympic sport) for
years and, if they ever let you go, you will not be able to object; the
pardon for the torturers (and their superiours) -- both retroactive and
covering the future -- has been written into this "law" also, to cover
all bases.
You'd better make sure that your neighbors like you -- that your
dog/cat doesn't poop on their lawn, that your wife is not prettier than
his and that your child's grades in school are lower than his child's.
'cause, otherwise, you may find yourself "disappeared" for years and
year. And, if you do re-appear (no guarantees and, frankly, not bloody
likely), you might find that your neighbor is now in possession of your
house, your wife and your pet as well (not to mention that you have a
couple on new kids who look just like him)
After 33.5 yrs, US is, *finally*, beginning to "feel like home"-- back
in communist Poland, where human rights and democracy were an illusion.
I suggest everyone should start reading Franz Kafka as soon as possible
(also Aldous Huxley, also George Orwell)
I'm not a poet but, today, I feel attuned to Mayakovski and his
"solution" to being helpless in the face of the evils the "world"
imposes on us; it's better to die by one's own hand than be shredded by
what one once believed in...
Yours, in deep mourning,
T
PS If I don't post within a week, please notify one of the following:
*International* (not US) Red Cross,
Amnesty International (outside US, not one of the US branches),
Any of the Human Rights organisations (international, outside US).
All the branches within US will have to be considered corrupt to a
great extent, since their funding depends on the same source that's
taking away basic human rights.
People who disappear tend to disappear forever but it's good to leave a
trail so that, 20yrs down the road, one can, perhaps, be the name that
tips the statistics from "unbelievble" to "perhaps worth another look".
