I agree that in normal use, jewellery is worn and subject to the acids,
dirt and oils that normal handling and wearing subject it to. I'm sure
that most of us clean our jewellery (or have it cleaned by a jeweller)
regularly to keep it looking good. The cleaning and polishing processes
will also, over time, have an adverse effect on the metals and can
loosen gem settings; so with articles such as these it is important to
keep the need for cleaning to a minimum - hence the need for gloves.
Local news reports (I live in South Staffordshire, not far from
Birmingham and the museum where they are on show) have shown long queues
of people wanting to see the hoard - I think it might be better to wait
a week or two, depending on how long they are going to be displayed for!
