Thanks for the help I have received regarding my wayward Download Express - perhaps it was the combined thoughts that influenced it to behave again as it was going to get sorted out if it didn't.
Anyway, during the evening things changed - first of all it didn't close itself and whatever webpage I was trying to download from; instead it appeared to download but the file wasn't actually there. Finally, just before bed I had one last try and it worked normally. So who knows what has been going on the last couple of days.
