When we moved from New York to Iowa, we had two cats who hated being in the car. We bought carriers for them, big ones that would allow them to stand up and move around a bit. We also had their litter box separately in the car. Before we made the trip we got them used to their carriers by putting their food and water in the carriers, and also got them used to wearing a harness. When the time came for the move they were fine in their carriers and we put them on leashes while out of the car. They used the litter box in the trunk.

Neither of them were very happy with the situation, but they made it and we all stayed sane.
