No, I think Clay and David  are referring to the stencils that were cut from
a layered stencil and you used the red 'stuff' to fill the holes if there
was a mistake.  It was run through a press that squeezed the ink out of the
holes and you got the black text on the sheet.  Those were for the 'fancy'
things that went home to our parents.  That's the mimeograph, and I think
Gestetner (now bought out by Ricoh) made those.

You're referring to the Ditto machine or spirit duplicator and it was the
fumey purple stuff - you wrote or typed on it, separated the sheets and then
it was run through the machine.  Sometimes we got purple and mint or red on
the same test, and everyone sniffed the page as soon as they got it to see
just how 'fresh' off the press it was :-)  It used isopropyl alcohol and
another, maybe methanol?
