Originally, blackwork was considered the mark of an accomplished needleworker. When worked with skill and patience, the front and the back of the work are indistinguishable! That was the challenge. Today, most people who do blackwork don't take the time to work it the way it was once worked, and the back is just as messy as any embroidery. I'm just finishing up a large piece of embroidery that has several areas of blackwork, and they are quite boring to work, since I don't care how the back looks.
