Darlene-
The best book I have seen on Irish Crochet is Clones Lace: The Story and
Patterns of an Irish Crochet by Maire Treanor, published in Ireland by
Mercier Press (available in the US from several suppliers of lace or crochet books).
Maire Treanor was instrumental in the revival of Irish Crochet as a cottage
industry.
The first part of the book is the story of Clones Lace (Clones is a town
that was a center of crochet making in the 19th century), and the workers
then and now. Maire Treanor takes the worker step by step through the traditional
motifs, then adds edgings and the traditional Clones knot filling. Projects
start with a rose brooch, and work up through coasters, doilies, handkerchief
corners, collars and a christening bonnet. She suggests threads to use, but if
you want to use something different, the book has a very handy chart showing
what size hooks are appropriate with various size threads. The book has many
great color and b & w photos, and every motif has at least one good close-up
photo. Very user-friendly.
