and
> Patterns of an Irish Crochet by Maire Treanor, published in Ireland by
> Mercier Press (available in the US from several suppliers of lace or
crochet books).

While that is an excellent book, I really don't see it as being on a
beginner's level. Much better for starting out (in my opinion) is a
full-size paperback booklet from the American School of Needlework called
Learn to do Irish Crochet: Easy-to-follow Instructions and 5 Projects, by
Nan Mensinga.

About 6 months ago I gathered every book on Irish Crochet I could lay my
hands on (with quite a bit of success <g>), as I prepared to teach some Girl
Scouts Irish Crochet. This book is by a long shot the most beginner-level
one I found. It begins with how to hold a crochet hook (in case someone
doesn't already know), and that is followed by 10 pages of large, clear
diagrams (many on each page), covering each stitch and variation, along with
helpful suggestions of what to pay attention to. The projects are pretty
simple, yet still manage to include almost all of the usual basic forms.

I can't recall for sure, but I *think* I purchased it from Lacis.

Hope this helps,
