I had a lovely day at Christchurch Lace Day yesterday. Stephen Pearce gave a slide show talk on how he and Hilary make their engraved bone bobbins in the morning. Then in the afternoon we had a chance to buy a plain bone bobbin (2 pounds unspangled, 2 pounds 50 spangled) and have a go at engraving a simple design on it ourselves. In addition to the flowers Stephen demonsrated, I asked if I could put my name in dots - simple. However, having tried on a scrap piece of bone and discovered that I can't aim, I'm totally ham-fisted and, as I've said previously, haven't got an artistic bone in my body, stopped at four fairly pathetic flowers and let Stephen put my name on in script. Still, I did it, I enjoyed it and I'm proud of it. (DH just laughed.)
So if any group is looking for a speaker and hasn't tried him, I recommend Stephen Pearce. Hilary runs lacemaking workshops.
