Does anyone know if there is a reference that talks about different threads
(say tatting #80 vs #70) and how much the grid size (dots/inch) should change
to accomodate one thread or the other? I'm particulary interested in Torchon
lace.
The *very first* resource I always reach for is the chart that Holly Van Sciver has compiled. It's not as extensive, perhaps, as some of the *books* (Brenda Paternoster's or Martina Wolter-Kampmann's) since the only threads listed are the ones she carries... And it's no good for "visuals" (*how* a different thread behaves when thrust into a particular situation), the way the compendiums of cotton and linen threads that the Canadian Gazette published are... Nor does it "cover" all the laces I'd like to see (the English laces being Holly's specialty, Torchon, Beds and Bucks are the ones she concentrates on)...
But, for the first -- and *quick* -- reference, it can't be bested.... It tells you straight off how many pinholes per footside inch you need to have to use 80, and how many for 70, and which lace to use them in. And which threads are suitable as gimps, and for what "base" thread... Once you have *that*, and need a substitute, one of the books (or someone on Arachne <g>) can tell you what to use. Or how to resize the pattern to the thread you have.
Holly updates the chart periodically, as some threads go out of production and are replaced by others (I have two -- slightly different -- versions of the chart, and hope to pick up a third at the coming IOLI Convention). The chart itself is dirt-cheap, though I'm not sure it's worth the postage if that's all you're getting. OTOH, I've never been able to restrict myself to only one thing... :)
