Linen stitch can be the same as whole stitch - it depends on what stitch you call whole stitch in the first place!
In Jana Novak's books (as in a lot of European, not English books) Linen stitch means cross twist cross Whole stitch means cross twist cross twist (ie twice half stitch or whole stitch and twist). This notation makes a lot of sense, but can be confusing to those of us who learnt the English way.
