Thanks to all who replied (on-list and off) with explanations of how one may tell the difference between handmade and machine made lace. I have a much better understanding now.

Someone suggested that I get Elizabeth Korella's "Guide to lace and Linens". It looks like an interesting book, and am considering it. Then I found that Elizabeth Korella has a nice website. Through her site, I found a link to Lorelei Halley's website! So much interesting information and photos there! I could learn a lot from there.

I also checked out the site of the "Professor". What a generous resource! To echo what others have said, 'a real treasure'. What thrilled me was when I backtracked at the site, I found that there are similar resources available for download on many, many other fiber related topics. All I need to do now is set aside some download time for myself and make space on my computer!

Now I have a question which will show my ignorance. I do many different needlecrafts, most of which are portable. So, I always have something that I could take with me, wherever I go.
(One of the reasons I want to learn tatting is because there is no equipment involved (needle, etc.) that would forbid it on any airline.) Anyway, what I'm curious about is those of you that are exclusively fine lacemakers. My impression is that lace pillows/rolls are heavy and bulky. When you travel, what do you take along that is reasonable portable?

Thanks again for enhancing my learning experience.<G>
