Tamara, about 3 years ago in the IOLI bulletin there was a discussion (with diagrams and photographs) of a basketweave pattern (very much like a doubled half-stitch or a linen stitch version of kat stitch) which is called bruja or witch's stitch, at least in some hispanic lace traditions. I think you were remembering this stitch.
Just to tie in all the loose ends, the horse in the "coronation lace" at the Allhallows exhibition (#48, for those with the catalog or the CD) is made with witch's stitch (giving it a nice dappled effect), while having the obscure heraldic swirls and lavish use of point d'esprit characteristic of witch's work!
