Tamara, about 3 years ago in the IOLI bulletin there was a discussion (with
diagrams and photographs) of a basketweave pattern (very much like a doubled
half-stitch or a linen stitch version of kat stitch) which is called bruja
or witch's stitch, at least in some hispanic lace traditions. I think you
were remembering this stitch.
Spot on, Susan, thank you; witch's *stitch* it had been, and nothing to do with Binche... To use a Polish saying: I knew the church bell was ringinging, but didn't know which church... :)
But I still can't find the dratted thing... :(
