Well, here's a novel use for opening rings. We used to have these in various
sizes for hanging stirrup leathers, hay nets, etc on for display when we
sold horse tack back in the early 80s.

This person is saying they're for 'project threads together'. I assume she
means the flat plastic or card bobbins used in needlecrafts, but they could
be used to hold lace bobbins in a (small) group through their spangles.
These are only 6.5 cm diameter, but they are availabe in much larger sizes.
I think the largest we had was about 20 cm diameter.
