Irish crochet is my current obsession, after buying a copy of Maire Trainor's book on Clones lace. They use size 40 Cordonnet for the motifs and 60 for the ground. BTW, Piecework isn't as bad as most when it comes to thread. The only instance I've found that uses size 20 thread is for padding cord, with size 70 for the motif itself (wild rose corner after the Clones lace article).
Louise, you might want to join a list like [EMAIL PROTECTED] It's a fairly quiet list, but there are links to useful tips. Maire Treanor is on that list, although she doesn't post often. Irish Crochet is usually done with size 80 cordonet for motifs and size 100 for ground. However, for babies, I would use lace thread such as DMC Broader Machine 50, or equivalent. That would make a dainty and stunning gown.
