Dear Cindy Rusak, You asked if threads today also is made of silver and gold. Yes it is, you can buy silver and gold "gilted" thread. It is not solid, but only the outer layer is made of silver and gold. Kreinick and Beton & Johnson are companyes wich still make this thread. But in old days, almost all the thread was made of silver og gold. When clothes embellished with these prescious threads was discharged, they were burned to recykle the gold and silver. I also am using real gold and silver threads on some of my embroideries, i get my threads from USA.
