So, about the rings (couronnes? sp.?) it says somewhere they are applied
with stab stitch and that isn't in the index. I am jumping around in the
book at the moment so maybe it is explained somewhere but I thought I'd ask
here.

Generally "stab stitch" refers to sewing with the needle straight up-and-down, with the thread going through the fabric only once per stitch.
That is as opposed to the type of sewing where the needle goes down through the fabric and back up again with every stitch, so the thread travel through the fabric twice per stitch. With that type of sewing the thread usually travels through the fabric at something of an angle.
Hope this helps. If I were giving directions for attaching couronnes, I would probably say they should be invisibly tacked to the lace.
