I haven't made that particular pattern, but have done some very similar ones. Looking at the pictures in the book, the trails are fairly well packed. If they are not the tendency is for gaps to develop between the trail and the edge pins. If you find that it is too packed leave a pair out. Do check that you have 50 cotton as well and not 30:))

thread was too thick and however hard I tensioned the trail crossings just
wouldn't lie flat (I broke an awful lot of threads in the process of trying,
