Am I the only person who uses *mouth* as "the third hand"? <g> If my sewings are too far apart to tuck the hook out of the way between the bent little finger and the palm comfortably, that's where I keep it (otherwise, it gets lost <g>). Also, in the winter, I may tuck it -- head down, and ready to pull out with a deep wrist-bend -- into my right sleeve, if the cuff is tight enough. In the summer (short sleeves), I tuck it under the stretchy watch-band (wear the watch on the left hand) -- again: head down, and the shaft ready to be pulled out.

It sounds like you've solved all the other -- and more difficult -- problems of making one-handed sewings. Having the hook ready is easy-peasy, in comparison... :)
