Tamara and Spiders,

The reply about one's mouth being the third hand made me smile! I always
used to keep Lazy Susan/Crochet hook etc. in my mouth at stress-inducing
times such as Bucks Point sewings...... Until ... I put my hand up to
retrieve the wig-hook (much finer than the finest crochet hook, and antique
to boot) and managed to impale my finger, with the hooked end of the
wig-hook going in at the first finger joint, and almost, but not quite,
emerging at the second joint. My husband had just opened the door to a VIP
client, and I didn't feel capable of driving myself to the hospital - and
no, I *wasn't* brave enough to push the hook on through, cut the end of the
hook off (the tool was antique, so of course I wasn't going to damage it!)
and then slide it back. And anyone who knows me, knows just how squeamish
I am, and also knows that I wouldn't have stayed vertical if I'd had to do
all that. So - our daughter was recruited to drive me to the hospital -
she hadn't passed her test, but another friend of hers had, so he came along
too as the 'capable' - the term was vbery loosely appplied - driver.

The Accident and Emergency nurse promised faithfully that she wouldn't laugh
when I told her what had happened - but that promise was broken, and with a
vengeance. Similarly the X-ray technicians. But the doctor hadn't a
ghost of an idea what a crochet hook was, and of course, when I drew one, it
was on a far larger scale than the item itself. So - thinking I had half
an anchor buried in my finger, he slit the skin between the joints, and
removed the hook that way! Just before I fainted, I did manage to
persuade him *not* to throw the hook away - but he was heard to mutter that
he never wanted to see me or the hook, ever again! I wonder why .....

So - I do try not to use my mouth too much nowadays - except for the normal
chatter and gossip!

Carol - in a grey Suffolk UK, but on the way to a small grandson's birthday
party, so a good afternoon in prospect!
