Yeah, that was a part of the problem... I wanted two shades of each "primary" -- each shade having both darker and lighter version, and each "skewing" towards the next "primary".
(red, orange, yellow, lime, green, aqua, blue, purple, red?)
I ended up eliminating the clear blue altogether. Had dark (wine) red with orange red, then orange yellow with lemon yellow, then lime green with emerald green, then blue-y purple with a reddish one. Since each section was to be separated from the next by a gold "line" (with all sections converging into a gold -- 8-armed -- "star" in the centre), it wasn't half bad. The braids were to alternate between a shorter variant of Archways and Lattice 3 (braid names and patterns from the Read and Kincaid books on Milanese lace).
I even started working on it and, although it was a bit "busy", it still wasn't half bad. But it got "busier" and "bad-er" the longer I worked on it, *and* I messed up in a couple of places, so snipped and re-thought.
Decided to make it smaller and in just two colours -- two sections (opposite sides) and the "star" in gold and in the Archways variant, and the remaining 6 sections (3 each in between the gold ones) in blue, with Lattice 3 as the pattern. Copied the pattern in its new size twice (one sheet for keeping notes), made the new pricking, decided which sections were to be gold and which blue. I was ready for "take 2"
And then, yesterday, the "rover" named Spirit landed on Mars, and I heard about it last thing before going to bed (thank's, Toni)...
This morning, when I looked at the pattern again, I saw it differently; the two gold sections spinning out from the central "star" looked a bit like comet tails... The blue, yes -- we're the "blue planet" -- but why not add the *red* planet to the mix?
So, the current "game plan" is that the gold parts (the "star" and the two "tails") will be made as "scheduled", but the remaining 6 will be split in half: 3 blue, 3 red. If I'm careful in choosing shades, it should work (works on paper, anyway; thanks for the art supplies, Clay <g>). If it does, I'll have a new Christmas ornament which is: 1) visible against the tree's green; 2) well-enough proportioned (the gold is more "massive" than the other colours, being on top)...
It was only as I was half-way through the first gold "slice" that I realised... 3) I'm back to the 3 -- commonly acceptable -- primary colours :)
