I've always understood that 'a coin of the realm' refers to coins which are currently legal tender and that it's only illegal to deface these. As the coin on the bobbin is a shilling and no longer legal tender I think it's OK to do what they've done. I've just acquired several farthings and silver threepenny pieces with the aim of drilling holes in them to use as spangles.
