The more I think about and read about Binche, the less I think I know what it 
is. Only one thing seems to be clear: it wasn't made in Binche. Some people 
seem to think it was made in Valenciennes. Bertha Van Doren (Lace Magazine) 
seemed to think it was made in Antwerp. As a rule of thumb, I would have said it 
was a Flemish lace with no gimp and lots of snow ball grounds. But then you 
see variations ranging from simple strips where there are actually plaits 
connecting snow balls to elaborate lappets which might be called Valenciennes if 
there was a Valenciennes ground in them, but there is not. Then there is the 19th 
century Point de Fee. What do you think Binche is? If you were trying to put 
together an exhibit to illuminate the nature of Binche, what would you 
include?
